In May 2026, US News overhauled its Best Countries methodology, moving from a perception-based survey to a data-driven framework that evaluates 100 nations across 100 indicators of prosperity, institutional performance, and societal well-being — replacing the reputation-based scoring used in prior editions. That overhaul reshuffled the Best Countries for Education sub-ranking, and the current list above is the one now used to answer this exact question.
For citizenship and residency seekers, this matters in a very practical way: five of these seven countries — Iceland, Switzerland, Australia, the UK, and Sweden — run residency and, in some cases, investment-linked pathways that intersect directly with education planning for relocating families.
How we ranked these countries
No single ranking answers “which country has the best education?”, because each one measures something different. We used four lenses:

Visa-free travel is not study rights. A Caribbean or Vanuatu passport typically offers visa-free short stays in the Schengen area and the UK. Studying for a term or longer still requires a student visa.
Residency is different from citizenship. Programmes in Portugal, Greece or Turkey can give a family a base where children enrol in local schools. Each has its own rules.
